Character in Literature ![]() |
$25.00 | |
| This paper uses Robert Frost\'s \"The Road Not Taken\", Kate Chopin\'s \"The Story of an Hour\", and \"Theodore Roethke\'s \"My Papa\'s Waltz\' to show how authors use characters to tell a story. Character is an extremely important element of literature. Authors of literature write poems and tell stories through the use of characters. A writer can use different elements of a character, including the characters private thoughts, speech, actions, feelings, and physical characteristics, to tell a story and to enable the reader to identify with the character portrayed in the piece. Readers follow the fortunes of the characters . . . we are often less concerned with what happened than with what happened to him or her (DiYanni, 2007, p 60). Characters in literature can remind people of themselves, or become appealing because they are very different. It may also be possible for readers of literature to relate to characters that represent some aspect of their own lives, such as alternative directions we might have taken, or alternative decisions we might have made (DiYanni, 2007, p 1270). As a reader reads different types of literature, the characters used in these stories and poems come alive for the reader. Through the use of characters, authors allow the reader to step outside of reality and permit him or herself to be caught up in the life of the story (DiYanni, 2007, p 60). Without characters, essentially, there would be no story. Authors use different types of characters, different characteristics of characters, and various types of characterizations to tell or enhance a story or other type of literary work for the reader. ... Teaching a student to read with phonics - the FUNdamentals program ![]() |
$25.00 | |
| In this country, approximately one-half of Americans cannot read at a sixth grade level. This means that about 90 million people cannot read a newspaper or a magazine, and struggle daily with tasks that focus on reading. Additionally, an article written in March of this year states 14 percent of the adult population does not read well enough to fill out a job application or understand a news article written at an eighth-grade level. This is according to the federal government\'s National Center for Education Statistics (Pfister, 2009). Thankfully, we now have programs in place to identify students who do not have basic reading abilities, and programs that can help them develop those abilities while they are still in school. ). One example of these types of programs is the use of the program FUNdamentals. FUNdamentals is a program that was developed, and is taught by, Jeanie Eller. This program uses the specific sounds of the alphabet, and teaches students how these sounds fit together to form words. This method has been proven to be especially effective for teaching younger students how to read. It has been concluded that reading instruction in grades K-3 must effectively address the following five essential components: 1) phonemic awareness, 2) phonics, 3) fluency, 4) vocabulary, and 5) comprehension. ...
