The History of Reading Instruction |
$30.00 |
The history of reading instruction started with the first settlers of America. They stressed the importance of reading in order for their children to read the Bible. From then on, reading instruction has taken many different paths and it is still changing even today. It started off with reading for religious purposes. That notion stayed with reading instruction for quite some time.
As America became free, reading shifted towards unifying a new country and creating its own identity. The alphabet method was taught to help the people read. It focused on learning the alphabet letter names and the syllabary. The alphabet method was used in hornbooks and spellers. Noah Webster sought to change that. He believed that the sounds of the letters should be taught along with syllables. From that, America developed a system that would focus its reading instruction on phonics and syllables rather than the names of letters.

Teaching a student to read with phonics - the FUNdamentals program |
$25.00 |
In this country, approximately one-half of Americans cannot read at a sixth grade level. This means that about 90 million people cannot read a newspaper or a magazine, and struggle daily with tasks that focus on reading. Additionally, an article written in March of this year states 14 percent of the adult population does not read well enough to fill out a job application or understand a news article written at an eighth-grade level. This is according to the federal government\'s National Center for Education Statistics (Pfister, 2009). Thankfully, we now have programs in place to identify students who do not have basic reading abilities, and programs that can help them develop those abilities while they are still in school. ). One example of these types of programs is the use of the program FUNdamentals. FUNdamentals is a program that was developed, and is taught by, Jeanie Eller. This program uses the specific sounds of the alphabet, and teaches students how these sounds fit together to form words. This method has been proven to be especially effective for teaching younger students how to read. It has been concluded that reading instruction in grades K-3 must effectively address the following five essential components: 1) phonemic awareness, 2) phonics, 3) fluency, 4) vocabulary, and 5) comprehension.
