Theoretical Perspectives |
$20.00 |
There are many different ideas and explanations proposed to explain how children develop into adults. These ideas typically develop into theories, or sets of information that are used to give reasons for certain behaviors, and explain certain situations or occurrences. Theories also develop hypotheses, or attempts to predict, based on the sets of information given, what may happen in the future. Development theories are based around certain sets of criteria. Theorists responsible for developing these theories regarding childhood development are influenced by how they view certain issues. These issues include whether or not children play an active role in initiating behaviors or play a passive role with predictable responses in their own development, whether or not development occurs in a smooth, continuous flow with quantitative changes, or in specific stages with qualitative changes, and whether or not development is primarily genetically driven or environmentally driven. Based on their views of these criteria, theorists are able to develop theories or perspectives of childhood development to explain behavioral and physical patterns, as well as to predict what may occur as the development process continues. Three examples of perspectives derived by theorists with this information include the learning perspective, the contextual perspective, and the evolutionary or sociobiological perspective. Each of these perspectives uses certain criteria to determine how children develop, and to explain certain behavioral patterns. These perspectives are very similar in some ways, and very different in others. It is important to understand these different development perspectives, their similarities, and their differences, in order to understand the various theories of childhood development, how these theories explain the development of the overall child, and how these theories can assist a child to reach their full potential.
